Hey little train! Wait for me!
I was held in chains but now I'm free
I'm hanging in there, don't you see
In this process of elimination

FULL VIEW or DOWNLOAD PLEASE! And oh yeah... Deathly Hallows Movie pt. 1 Spoiler

Yes, yes, from that infamous dance scene in the new HP movie. And before you hardcore canon shippers go in a tizzy, yes I am a H/HR shipper (and proud of it. Dun care what ppl say). But the reason why I adore this scene has absolutely nothing to do with my couple preferences. And those of you who hate it purely because it isn't in the book, or because you're a hardcore canon shipper ARE MISSING THE POINT OF THE SCENE!

Rather, I was more overcome with the situation, the song, the emotion of it all. These were children who were forced into growing up quickly, for the first time all on their own. Their closest friend just left and they're feeling more alone than ever; the weight of the world literally on their shoulders. At this point you can just tell they're just so tired and vulnerable.

Then Harry holds out his hand and does a goofy little dance with Hermione and in that one second they're just the children that they're meant to be. And when it's over, the burden is a little bit lighter, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still there.

I literally teared up just because the entire thing was so bittersweet and heartbreaking (yes I'm a sap. duh), and yet at the same time I couldn't help but giggle at the silliness. And no, Harry/Daniel Radcliffe genuinely can't dance. But I think it's so great that he can't. It just makes it all the more innocent. It's an apology, a thank you, an affirmation that he's there for her even when he doesn't know how to be. And most of all, it's an escape.

One of the most poignant scenes I've ever seen. The song they chose was really perfect for it too. Also from a directing standpoint, this scene was needed as a break from the constant angst and anxiety. As much a comic relief for the characters as it was for the audience.

End. Ramble.

Anyway, it was a while since I felt so moved by something in a movie that I had to draw it. I hope I caught it right. Admittedly it gave me a bit of practice with sketching interacting characters. For some reason it was hard!

Sketched in Photoshop

And for those who want to know, the song that Harry and Hermione are dancing to is "O' Children" by Nick Cave

I don't understand why people need to be so intolerant! There are other things they could complain about in HP movie adaptations...

I agree with your interpretation for the scene and I add: this is that awkward moment in which your dear friend is feeling pain (her lover & friend just abandoned them & their cause, and said some pretty hurtful things & accusations. Though she's knows them to be untrue, it must still be nagging her, eating at her. Like every untrue projection people make of us. Sometimes we start questioning even ourselves: is that how others see me? Do I pass that image without noticing?) & you want to make him/her feel better, but you don't know how. Words are hollow, and a silly joke might just be distasteful all things considered.

You fight for something, anything to make your beloved ones hurt a little less. And then sometimes something random, spontaneous, wordless occurs. A little dance, grabbing her/his hand and running running aimlessly until you're both out of breath and finding yourselves on a lonely park surrounded by trees, the silent sliding of a candy into my point of view xD After my father's funeral back when I was 15, not on the day, but like a day or two after... I remember a friend invited me to hang out with her and some others, so I could "breath a different air", and we were talking just fine, but suddenly everyone just got quite. It's usually more awkward to the ones around than to the one who has someone die... And just as suddenly a pillow fight ensued! I can't remember who started it now, it's been like almost 9 years? not sure... But it was so freeing, it was honestly fun... How should I explain it? It wasn't a kind of human rational fun, with your brain still working. It had a je ne sais quoi of animalistic, instinctive... My laughter was true, my arms hurt after from all that throwing and hitting, but some of the negative energy had been spent. Being tired because of your emotions or overworking brain lets one feeling sickly, with insomnia, etc... But physical tiredness? Well, there's nothing purer than that to fall asleep. It's like you've been cleansed.

So yeah, escaping reality as a constant is bad. But sometimes you do need a little escape, to breath, to let some light in, to let a bit of the wound start to heal. For a short moment, there are no horcruxes, no Voldemort, no world doom looming... There's just two people being silly, sharing a smile, a moment; doing what should be a given to people their age. No words to complicate it. You're my best friend, I know your pain, I share it, put this negativity-inducing thing away, take my hand and come and dance with me.

P.S.: And it makes sense the film crew decided to give the film a breather. A friend of mine said, and he loves the HP books, that the books got to be a tiring read. I asked him to explain further (discussions discussions Heart ) and he said "I wanted to read a book about magic, not a book about camping! *laughs*". So there xD

I'm strictly a Ronmione and Hinny shipper, and I'm dead against unnecessary additions to an adapted-from-print film, but I completely  loved this scene. It illustrates Harry and Hermione's relationship so perfectly.

Your drawing AND your explanation did this scene complete justice. I'm a H/HR shipper right along with you, but I, too, did not like this scene for those reasons. I kind of want to copy and paste your explanation for all to see, as I think some still don't understand. (I won't, but I WILL link them to this deviation.)

This was one of the more bittersweet scenes to watch in DH...

In the moment itself, I felt angry, because it felt like a tease... A bone they threw us Harmony shippers...

But in hindsight I do see everything you described.

Anyway, your artwork is simple but beautiful. Catching all the raw emotion that was going on...

Well done and thank you.

Very nice image.

Was I the only one who was watching this part of the movie going "This'd be a really bad time for Ron to walk in"?

that's so sweet~! and even thought I'm a Harry/Ginny and a Hermione/Ron shipper, I liked this scene for the reasons stated above in the artists comments. it was just two friends acting silly. It was what they really needed at that point.

Yes. Thank you. You explained it perfectly. I'm a Romione person and all of my Romione friends never understood why I liked this scene. Now I know what to say to their dumb faces. :D

Yes, it's a shame it didn't happen in the books, I love that brother-sister bond they had.

That scene should have ended in a kiss, even if it wasn't on the lips. But looking at Hermione's face at the end of the dance, had she gotten that close to Harry's lips, I imagine it wouldn't have stopped at just one kiss.

Great scene, great art!

I was so hoping against hope that a kiss would happen...

I loved HP/DH!!!! it was one of the best ways you could possibly end the series, and for me, it was a bit of a tear jerker. I understand what you are trying to say ^^^^^^^^^ and i am also a H/HR supporter!
Skizzenbuch94 Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2012
For me, one of the best scenes in the movie... Thinking that in a war, you could do something as normal as dancing
bella-chan16 Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2012
I LOVE Ron/Hermione...the way it was done in the books. (It's not bad on screen but it lacks the intensity.) But I will admit that Dan and Emma have some great chemistry. I also thing Harry/Ginny was done better in the books as well. I do ship Neville/Luna even though it wasn't in the book, so am open to other ideas...but maybe not with R/Hr. But whatever this is a great picture.
chaz172 Featured By Owner Nov 15, 2012
I love this picture, the dance scene (and obviously the kissing scene they have) are 2 examples as to why they are so much better to be together then Hermione/Ron and Harry/Ginny, these 2 have a chemistry that goes way beyond what the canon pairings will ever have

Man, this made me almost cry. I'm still mad at Rowling for ending the series the way she did. Seriously, when Harry got with Ginny I was like; Dafuq this come from? That was also my reaction when Ron and Hermione got together. Both those pairings made no sense whatsoever. Sigh, oh well, that's what fanfiction is for I suppose.
